Short version: your chat is read in your browser. We only use a sample of it to write your song, and we don't store your chat. Here's the long version, still short.
Your chat file
When you drop a WhatsApp or iMessage export into chatbop, it's opened and parsed on your device, in your browser. The file itself is never uploaded to us as a whole.
Your browser counts messages, emojis and late-night texts, then picks a sample of messages (at most around 120,000 characters) to send to our server, together with those stats, the names you choose and your song settings (who it's for, the genre, the language, anything you tell us to include or avoid).
Writing the song
Our server forwards that sample to Anthropic (the company behind Claude), which writes the title, lyrics and style of your song, and processes it under its commercial API terms. We don't keep the sample or the stats on our servers once the song is written.
Recording the song
To turn lyrics into music, we send the lyrics, title and musical style (not your chat) to our music-generation provider. Once a take is finished we copy the audio to our own storage so your song link keeps working; the provider deletes its copy after about two weeks.
Payments
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We keep a payment reference so we know how many songs your pack still has.
What we keep, and for how long
Once a song is written we keep the song itself (title, lyrics, the handful of quoted “receipts”, fun facts and the audio) on our servers so its link works on any device. A song that is never recorded is deleted after 30 days; a recorded song is kept for a year, or until you ask us to delete it. We also keep the email address Stripe gives us at checkout, to send you the song and nothing else. Your browser keeps a copy of your songs too; clearing its data removes that copy. We don't use advertising cookies or ad trackers; if we ever add analytics, this page will say so first.
Be nice to the people in your chat
- Only upload conversations you're part of.
- Your friends are in there too — think about whether they'd be happy to hear their messages sung.
- Don't use chatbop to embarrass, harass or expose anyone.
